Welcome!
I’m Kate, nice to meet you! What am I up to, you ask? Currently I’m earning my Masters degree in Museum & Gallery Studies at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. As part of my practice-based coursework I’ve taken on many projects along the east coast of Scotland: from acting as Exhibition Project Manager at the Scottish Fisheries Museum in Anstruther to developing an oral histories collection at the HMS Unicorn in Dundee.
Before moving to Scotland I was the Camp Coordinator at Thinkery Children’s Museum, where I developed, prototyped, and wrote STEM-based curriculum that encourages inquiry and playful learning for grades PreK-5th. During the summer months, I supervised and supported approximately forty educators, fifty volunteers, and one thousand three hundred children at Thinkery Camps.
Prior to joining Thinkery, I created digital educational resources for the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), Arlington National Cemetery, Museum of Fine Arts Boston, and the Kemp Center for the Arts. I earned my B.A. in History and a Museum Studies Certificate from the University of Texas.
My Work
With new information and communication technologies rapidly changing society’s relationship with education, museums as socially responsible organizations must continuously evolve to meet their audiences’ needs.
Creating supportive experiences that encourage inquiry, reflection, and critical thinking is at the heart of all I do. Whether that’s through developing a digital toolbox, building an immersive environment, curating a community-driven exhibition, or coordinating STEM summer camps, I aspire to create open-ended experiences that foster playful participation.
If I’m not in a museum, you can find me…
Hiking
When I’m in Austin, Texas, you can catch me exploring Enchanted Rock, Barton Creek, and the rest of the Greenbelt.
When I’m in St. Andrews, Scotland, I can be found everywhere and anywhere- Fife Coastal Path, Inner Hebrides islands, lochs, etc. I hope to start bagging Munros soon!
Traveling
I love solo traveling, especially when I can spend a few weeks or months in one place and immerse myself in a culture.
…however if I’m traveling, chances are that I’m in a museum no matter the destination!
Sailing
Whether it’s sailing or kayaking, life is better on a boat!
I also do recurve archery, kickboxing, and musical theatre when I can squeeze it into my schedule….
Reading
I love to read anything and everything, but here are a few of my top fun fictional reads:
The Immortalists by Chloe Benjamin
S. by Doug Dorst and J.J. Abrams
The World to Come by Dara Horns
A Face Like Glass by Frances Hardinge
Good Omens by Neil Gaimen
The Lord of the Rings series by J.R.R. Tolkien
